Description:
During the course of her career, Viola Frey evolved from creating moderately-scaled “bricolage” sculptures inspired by her frequent visits to flea markets to create nearly lifesize figures (including double self-portraits) and subsequently monumental figures as both her ambition and her command of her medium increased. The World and the Woman is an example of her mature large-scale sculpture, which is more brilliantly colored than her earlier work. It dates to a time when Frey focused her monumental ceramics on several signature subjects: male figures, often in blue business suits (and vulnerable poses); confident standing females in floral-patterned dresses; and seated or reclining female nudes, sometimes accompanied by additional figures or globes. It took the installation crew from ICA - Art Conservation, Akron Art Museum and Andy Rock Fine Art Services three days to assemble The World and the Woman, but you can watch her reassembly in just over a minute!
